What does the Work From Home benefit cover?
Two things: a Homeworking Allowance of £6 a week towards household bills (broadband, electricity, heating and mobile), and a budget for home office equipment such as chairs, desks, monitors and headsets.
Is it taxable?
The Homeworking Allowance is exempt from Income Tax and National Insurance under s316A ITEPA 2003, up to HMRC's fixed rate of £6 a week, for employees with a homeworking arrangement. Equipment provided so an employee can do their job is exempt under s316, provided any private use is insignificant.
How much can we offer tax-free?
The Homeworking Allowance is fixed by HMRC at £6 a week (£26 a month); anything above that is taxable. For equipment, you set the budget — a one-off setup amount, an annual refresh, or both.
Do employees need to keep receipts?
Not for the Homeworking Allowance. At HMRC's fixed rate, no receipts or evidence of costs are required.
